Mythology (Delos) and Partying (Mykonos Beaches) in a Day!
Much more than just a shopping town, Mykonos also offers something for history junkies, such as myself. A short boat ride away lies the island of Delos; famous for being the birthplace of the twin gods, Apollo and Artemis, and for being one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Greece.
Of course, no trip to Mykonos would be complete without seeing some of its world-famous party beaches, revered the world over by clubholics.
* The fiancee and I posing by Mykonos Port before boarding our ferry to Delos. We were extremely fortunate to have seen the official island mascot, Petros the Pelican, the night before. (See previous entry)
* Delos is one of the oldest holy sanctuaries in the world, it having been inhabited as early as the 3rd millenium BC. In fact, it was already considered holy a full 1000 years before the Greeks claimed it as their own.
* Once one of the most important cultural centers in all of antiquity, Delos now stands uninhabited, save for the archaeologists and historians who have made the island among the most well-studied and excavated in the whole world.
* Monicca and I with the Statues at the House of Cleopatra having double date fun. The two were very excellent conversationalists!
* The House of the Trident, one of the most well-preserved, standing structures in the whole island. Delos was also famous for being the headquarters of the Delian League, the association of Greek city-states who united under the leadership of Athens to fight the Persians under Xerxes.
* An ancient sewerage system, with its tri-millenium-old green poop!
* The ruins of the Amphitheater, where comedies and tragedies used to be enacted. Sadly, this area hasn’t been well-preserved at all, and THAT is a tragedy. (see what I did there?)
* When the Greeks took over the island from its original inhabitants, the Carians and the Cretes (under King Minos of Crete), it soon morphed mythologically to become the birthplace of Apollo, god of the sun, and Artemis, goddess of the hunt, the children of Zeus and the Titaness, Leto.
* The Sacred Way was the path leading towards the Sanctuary of Apollo and was lined with monuments, treasures, offerings and statues donated by the kings, heroes and generals of the Ancient Greek city-states.
* The Sanctuary itself was guarded by the Terrace of the Lions. Originally there were twelve snarling marble guardians; however only seven remain today as the rest either crumbled with age or moved on, one of them having migrated to the Arsenale in Venice.

* When we decided to rent a car to explore the beaches, I was hoping for the chance to drive a Fiat or a Peugeot; instead we got this reliable and well-handling Hyundai!
* The beach nearest our hotel was Ornos Beach, one of the more family and tourist-friendly beaches in Mykonos. The abundance of restaurants, cafes, resorts and children playing by the shore attests to that fact.
* Some sights while driving around the island. Like the Northern Greek and Santorini countryside, Mykonos is very picturesque!
* Rougly 25 minutes (7 kilometers) from Mykonos Town along a narrow, winding road lies Super Paradise, the gay and nude beach mecca of Europe. On the way there are loads of posters and tarps promoting the various events in the beach.
* Glad to see some of my company’s products so very well-represented here, along with Super Paradise’s mascot, a viper giving a very sneaky-alluring look.

* Having gotten here after lunch, there was hardly anyone here save for the sunbathers.
* The party starts promptly everyday at 4pm, with the music progressively getting louder, and crowd getting thicker until the break of dawn.
* This shot of the serene and relaxing beach disguises the fact that it can get REALLY wild here during the peak time, as countless youtube videos will show you.

* Some blokes enjoying happy-hour drinks, though it was less on beer and more on colorful, martini glasses with umbrellas on them.
* I have to say that gay men have the hottest female companions! Check out this chica’s perfect Gluteus Maximus.
* After having lunch in Super Paradise, we headed over to Paradise Beach, Mykonos’ most popular beach, known for its wild parties especially during the summer.
* In contrast to Super Paradise and its vibrant gay atmosphere, Paradise is the hang-out of all the teenagers and college students of Europe and the Middle East.
* It then follows that everything here is catered to a younger market and is much cheaper! I immediately regretted having late lunch in Super Paradise when I saw how much a Souvlaki Pizza here costs.
* One of the most famous bars in the world, Tropicana Club was voted as Travel Channel’s best beach bar in the world for 2012.
* Owing to its status as a clubbing mecca, Paradise boasts of an impressive array of regular DJ’s including Avicii, Martin Solveig, Arman Van Helden, the Ministry of Sound and Hed Kendi, among many others.
* This colorful lounge bar playing the swankiest EDM tunes at 4pm was where we finally decided to get some happy-hour drinks.
* Hands-down the sand in Boracay Island is still the best in the world, as the one in Paradise is mixed with small stones.
* One should keep in mind though that people don’t come here to swim, people come here to PARTY!
